my entry for a zine: desktop ricing
My friend Mimi planned to make a little friend group zine quite a while ago. The theme could be anything we are passionate about and take any form that can be put well into a zine. I made my entry pretty soon, the entries by others are still taking a while and it's not been put together yet. But it's been almost a year and I wanted to document my entry somewhere before I forget.:)
During that time, I was (and still am) really into personalizing my devices on a software-level and having control over my devices. Not just changing wallpapers, but adjusting font, font size, icons, window borders and more. In the Linux community, you'll see this referred to as Linux ricing, but I'm sure there's ricing in other communities as well and it probably originated elsewhere.
I didn't want it to be too many pages, so it just scratches the surface. I also wanted to evoke a bit of a crunchier, more retro zine look.
Here's the stuff:
Looking back, I would also add Wallpaper Engine to the recommendations.
For the people who are interested in the Desktop examples used: Sadly, desktop designs like that are reposted and spread by strangers or posted anonymously, and even with reverse image search I wasn't able to attribute them. They aren't mine. If you have more success or know any of the creators, please tell me so I can attribute them here and in the zine.
I'm also currently working on putting this on itch.io in its original .tiff files, but of course ProtonMail is down just as I need to verify my address to upload... Edit: Here it is.
