When you read this, I might be dead. Hopefully not! But we never know when we might die. Random accidents, surgery complications, new viruses, cancer, old age, suicide...
It's important to me that there is a clear plan on what to do with my website and blog and that there is a way for people to find out that I died (and how).
So a few clarifications first:
- I have a lifetime plan on Bearblog, so any premium features I use should not run out. Everything should stay as is, as long Bearblog exists.
- My Nekoweb subscription will run out, but I don't really use anything from the Cute Kitty supporter tier, so things should stay as is as long Nekoweb exists.
- When I die, at some point my domains at Porkbun will run out. That means the URLs avas.space, blog.avas.space, notes.avas.space, and emeraldsip.cafe will stop working.
- The URLs that will work instead are the fallback defaults on the services I am at, so ava.nekoweb.org, avas.bearblog.dev and theemeraldsip.bearblog.dev.
- The Wayback Machine has my website, especially the laptop section, fully functional. It also seems to have all of my blog posts up until November 2024. I plan on periodically trying to archive things when I can, but if you as reader want to do it as well, feel free to. Archive.is also has some things, though less functional; seems to block JS.
This should solve how to find my content when things run out and shut down and my thoughts around preserving it.
As for how to be notified when I die: I deposited a note with my Master password for my password manager and the most important device passwords in one of my books for my wife to find, so she should be able to log into all of my accounts and notify people or cancel stuff. She should probably write a blog post here for when I die and also tell the cause of death.
If I think of more, I'll update this.
