what is this space?
Hey, you might be here because someone sent you a link, you saw it on a link aggregator site or a forum, or you stumbled upon me some other way. If you're not familiar with this area of the internet, I'd love to give you some infos.
First off, this is a personal blog - consider it like someone's more in-depth Facebook page where they actually post statuses (and opinions). I am not a journalist, I am not a professional writer, and I don't write for entertainment, education or money, I just do it as a hobby for myself. I think this is important to mention because when you're coming from other websites, you're usually used to everything that's linked being highly polished corporate/influencer work that's trying to sell you something and is content for a big audience to consume. This is not that. This is not a portfolio or newsletter of some sorts, either, and I never promote this blog or its posts anywhere.
This blog and my website are a part of something you'll find described as the personal web, the small web, the indie web, the web revival... they're all sort of separate, but overlap significantly and many times, the terms are used almost interchangeably.
- The personal web is comprised of personal websites - websites and blogs that focus on you, are created by you, and you are in control of it.
- More infos about indie web; this, as opposed to the corporate web (Meta, X, Reddit, etc.).
- Insight into the small web; this, as opposed to websites with tons of tracking, popups, paywalls, ads, huge loading times.
- Blog post about web revival; reclaiming the technology in our lives and asking what we really want from the tools we use, and the digital experiences we share.
I hope this adjusts your expectations and makes it easier to understand what you'll find here, what the focus is, and who it's for. Remember that you are reading what's basically the public journal entry of a stranger. That includes a lot of posts criticizing tech, but just as a food critic doesn't hate food, a tech critic doesn't necessarily hate tech.
On top of that, this blog exists on a blogging platform with a little bit of its own community - Bearblog. Things mentioned on this blog may be for or about the community and what's happening on its Discover section.
If you are also interested in making a web presence away from the big social media sites, you can sign up for a Bearblog as well1 or look at Neocities or Nekoweb if you want to learn to code your own website. If you need more assistance, the 32bitCafe and this interactive Unplatform guide has a lot of resources to get you started on this side of the web.
I am not on any social media services and this is not a Substack. This is existential courage in action, and what resistance to the digital coup looks like.
