the pros of a shaved head
Over a week ago, I decided to cut all my hair off due to persistent hair loss due to my illness and its medications.
Since then, I’ve been pretty happy with it. It’s just temporary until I am certain the loss slows down, and I do want long hair again in the future. Today, we shaved it again, 5mm this time. Now I look like a monk.
The following won’t be anything new for people who wear their hair short, but for any who wore their hair long almost all their life, let me detail some of the pros:
- They’re not knotted or matting when I spend so much time in bed when ill.
- No painful brushing.
- I’m not accidentally lying on or pulling my own hair (or others doing so)
- It isn’t getting caught in zippers, buttons, doors etc.
- I’m not accidentally ripping hair out when removing hairties; I don’t need hairties!
- No static hair when putting stuff on or taking it off.
- No pulling out the hair from under the hoodie, scarf or backpack which is super annoying.
- Easy time in the shower and after, dries quickly.
- No more loose hair everywhere!
- No bad hair days - it just is, unchangeable. No looking too flat, curled weird, too greasy, etc.
- Not flying around in my face when it’s windy.
- I’m never worried how the hair is currently positioned, if it’s flattering or not, if it emphasizes parts of my face I don’t like etc.; hair used to be part of my looks that could make or break the look on its own, now I don’t have to worry about if I should wear it up or down, braided or not, etc.
- Permission to be ugly/just exist? I’m taking my face as it is because hair cannot hide it now. Doing something considered ugly on purpose is better than trying to look conventionally attractive 24/7 and feeling like it’s failing.
- No hair products needed - no conditioner or specific shampoos or oils and masks. Water or the body shower gel is enough.
- Head massages feel a lot better, don’t mess up the hair and can be done with oil to take care of your scalp better than with long hair being in the way.
- It’s easier to detect new growth and if the existing hair is still growing; thankfully both is the case.
- Amazing examples: Kristen Stewart, FKA Twigs, Zoe Kravitz, Saweetie, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Natalie Portman and many more
- People surprisingly compliment me on it out of nowhere.
