cool links IV: healthcare, cool retro software, humanity
What I recently read/watched worth sharing:
AI in hospitals by Michael Kennedy and Isobel Cockerell. A nurse talks about the consequences of increasing AI use in the hospital she works at. Quote: “Critical thinking is being shifted elsewhere — to the machine. I believe the tech leaders envision a world where they can crack the code of human illness and automate everything based on algorithms. They just see us as machines that can be figured out.”
Five Years On: A Covid Retrospective by Nate Bear. A good and critical summary of the past few years and the hidden death toll. Quote: “In the US it is estimated than one in four people have some form of long covid. In both the US and UK, applications for long-term disability payments have soared to record levels since 2020, an increase so clearly and obviously connected to covid infections. Yet in our media, political and social discourse the increase is usually blamed on everything other than the virus.”
IMG_0416 by Ben Wallace. He discovered videos and images uploaded to YouTube via the inbuilt feature that existed on iPhones and iPods back in 2009-2012. The results are sweet; very authentic, fun, intimate moments by strangers.
Digging into Plantstudio by Pirijan. It’s about how a screenshot of old, aesthetically pleasing software sent the writer down the rabbit hole of finding the software, getting it to run, and finding out more about its creators.
Everyone wants warmth by Kerry. I found it a very honest and nice read about personal encounters and remaining open and curious about people.
Let’s talk about this 🇵🇸 by Tara Mooknee. Tara talks about the war on Palestine and its consequences. She shares some stories of individuals who have been hurt, displaced, or killed in the conflict and asks you donate or, if you can’t, to engage with or share the video for visibility.
