you cannot consume subversively (quote)

I was watching the latest Mina Le video essay yesterday, and I absolutely loved one quote in it, by Jessica DeFino on the Pleasure Seeking Podcast (never listened to it, so I can't say how good it is):

"I don't think you can consume subversively. I just don't think you can consume anything in a subversive way, because the downstream effects of that consumption are still there. It's how the products are being made. In a certain way, they're having the same impact on the environment. They're having the same impact on the workers who are making them. The factories are having the same impact on global warming. Your purchasing of them is putting money in the same pockets and upholding the same systems that are like, encouraging you to buy these products. You can have your intentions, no one's taking that away from you, but to call any sort of consumption subversive when it has the same effect on the world, I just think is misguided."
