story time: accidental cancer scare
There was one time last year my now-wife and I accidentally made people think I got cancer. How it happened is kind of hilarious in retrospect, so I wanted to share.
Last year when I shaved my hair down to a buzzcut due to hairloss from my meds, we were staying at my in-laws house in their guest bedroom. That’s the old childhood bedroom of my wife’s sister, mostly unchanged. So on the wall, there’s an art piece from that sister’s friend about the zodiac sign of the sister. It’s right above the bed. You see where this is going.
So after I shaved my head, we were in that room where I was sitting on the bed leaned against the wall. My wife took a picture of me and my fresh new look to reveal it to people. What we didn’t realize is that I was posing right next to the word “Cancer” from that drawing. So it looked like this was my reveal about having cancer and having had to shave my head for chemo. For us, we had seen that cancer art countless times before and it was just background noise.
We only realized after a reaction by someone. It was cleared up pretty quickly, thankfully! But yeah…. Ridiculous.
